meal cost

August 7th, 2005 at 04:14 am

I decided to start figuring out how much certain meals, that I make frequently, cost to prepare. For brunch today I made scrambled eggs, with tomatoes, cheese and green onions, and garlic toast and grapes.

Scrambled Eggs
3 eggs - 1 doz for .99 cents so .25 cents
2 Tbls diced tomatoes (leftover from earlier in the week) - 1 can for $1.00 so @.20 cents
1/2 green onion - 1 bunch was .50 cents and there were 8 onions in the bunch so .04 cents
1 slice American cheese - 16 oz for $1.00 so .05 cents
butter, salt and pepper - @.02 cents
Total cost for scrambled eggs = .56 cents

Garlic bread
1 slice bread - 1 load of french bread for .99 cents cut into 15 slices = .07 cents
butter and garlic salt - @.02 cents
Total cost for bread = .09 cents

Grapes at .88 cents/lb around 15 grapes = .20 cents

Total for brunch = .85 cents

I made a big batch of spagetti sauce for dinner and froze enough for 3 more meals. I don't know how much it cost to make because I bought the stuff awhile back and don't remember the prices on everything. I'll have to figure it out the next time I make it.

The goal is to figure out what meals I make over and over and how much they cost and maybe to reduce that cost through sales. Also it will allow me to predict how much groceries should cost for a week based on a menu plan. And if I have a week where I'm very short on cash I can plan on the cheap meals.

Read Killing Time by Linda Howard. Romance/Mystery Linda Howard is one of my favorite authors and although this book was a good read it wasn't one of her best.
